Lizzie Borden Acquitted! New #zombies story coming...

 

Yesterday, June 20 was also notable as on this day in 1893, accused axe murderess Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the brutal murders of her father, Andrew Borden, and stepmother, Abby Durfee Borden.

To the dismay of some, she resumed life, even moving into a bigger, fancier house, which she called Maplecroft, up on the fancier section of town, "the Hill." Many think it was her way of thumbing her nose at them.

An anthology call I saw got me thinking again of what my version of Lizzie was doing after the trial as in my series, Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter. So, I'm working on a new short story that has her returning to a place she thought she'd left behind forever--her late father's business, the Borden Building in downtown Fall River, Mass. Got a unique idea for the zombies in this one. Can't wait to write that part!! There'll even be a bit of "horror humor" in that for those who get the analogy. Can't resist! Ha!

And... I'm revamping an earlier short novelette I wrote that has Lizzie, her sister, Emma, and instructor Pierre fighting off zombies in another area. This one has another family twist to it. I'm thinking of turning it into a story serial... Stay tuned for updates!! 

Lizzie Borden - 125th Anniversary of Borden Murders #horror

I'm doing sporadic new and older posts about Lizzie Borden in honor of the 125th anniversary this year of the Borden murders.

Yes, it is nothing to "celebrate," but the murders of Andrew Borden and his second wife, Abby Durfee Borden have become part of history and folklore. Who hasn't heard that little ditty... Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother 40 whacks...

The real crime that August 4th morning of 1892 is no less horrific, even if the rhyme has the numbers wrong. See Borden autopsy reports. 

Though Lizzie Borden, the younger spinster daughter/stepdaughter, was charged with the crimes, the jury declared her not guilty of the crimes on June 20, 1893.  

Did she do it? What do you say?

What are you doing now?

Reading. I found a rather unusual book of poetry recently published called The shadow of death: poems, songs, and sonnets written by Eric Stenbock. Given recent turns of events, it fit my mood rather well.

 What keeps you awake at night?
Not what you think.

 Are you a glass half empty or half full person?
I would say half full. I’ve learned there are things you can’t control in your life, so it’s best to look forward.

What is it about Fall River that keeps you here?
I was born here and prefer to die here. No matter what others think of me, this is my home and always will be.

If you could have a five-minute conversation with anyone living or dead, who would it be?
I would ask my father one question: Why?

3) Describe the book in a few sentences:

Everyone thinks Lizzie Borden murdered her father and stepmother one hot August morning in 1892 for the oldest of reasons—greed, social status, frustration… But what if she did it because she had to?

-- Name and describe the main character or characters from your book.

Is there anything worse than being tried for murder and facing the gallows?

Lizzie Borden wouldn’t have thought so until that hot August morning when she encountered her stepmother and father acting in ways she could never have imagined. What made them so? What can she do to protect herself and her sister Emma?

Virtually overnight, Lizzie goes from a quiet, unmarried, law-abiding Sunday School teacher, to an accused murderess. And that is only the beginning of the changes in Lizzie’s once staid life.

-- What were your inspirations, influences, or tributes in writing this book?

After looking at the autopsy photos from the Borden murders online, I realized that a new theory could be explored. It made perfect sense. What better reason to explain why Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother had both been hit in the head except that they had turned into zombies? The reasons why, of course, are far more sinister!

-- What do you hope readers take away from this work?

After writing my first zombie book, GIRL Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie, I wanted to tackle a more adult view of zombies. With GIRL Z, I wanted to show a teen’s personal struggle and sometimes humorous take on zombies.

In Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter, I am giving readers a new look at an infamous, but still barely known real life person. With the Lizzie book, I want readers to explore a changing world that faces the same problems we have today like greed, exploitation and expectations, but with a sinister and supernatural twist. Plus, there is always that one real life question –did she or didn’t she? This is my take on that.
