Today is the letter Z for Zombies – of course!

If you read this blog, you know that I am obsessed with zombies. And what’s not to love? The best part about the undead creatures is that they help us understand what it means to be human. We see all of our horrible, awful, primal traits reflected in their rotting forms. When humans are thrown into a survival situation, they often do terrible, evil things to each other to ensure they come out alive.

I’ve written several books about zombie, including fiction (Life After the Undead, Death to the Undead, and Finding Eden) and nonfiction (Undead Obsessed: Finding Meaning in Zombies).

Currently, I’m working on another young adult zombie series, and I’m almost done editing the first book.  

I’m not exactly sure when it will be coming out, but I’m hoping next year. I have a couple other releases that are coming out this year (not zombie books), so I want to give them a chance before releasing another into the world. I will let you know when it’s close!

My Latest Zombie Books

I finished the incredibly rough draft of my latest young adult zombie novel this week. I handwrite the first draft, so I’m in the process of typing it, then it needs edited—badly! But I’m very excited to have it done.

I think I may even have the title of the series and the title for the first book. It’s all tentative right now. Things could change when I go through and fix the story. It’s happened before. Still, it feels really, really good to have it done.

On top of that, Death to the Undead, the sequel to Life After the Undead, also came out this week. It’s early. It wasn’t supposed to come out until the 16th. I’m excited about that too. If you have the chance, I would love it if you checked it out.

I recommend reading the first so you know what’s going on, but it’s on sale right now through Valentine’s Day. It’s $1.99 on Kindle.

Next month, I will be re-releasing my young adult zombie novel Death to the Undead. This is the second book in the Life After the Undead series (Life After the Undead is the first), and we’re looking for ARC reviewers. Are you interested? Here’s the blurb to entice you further:

What does it mean to be an ARC reviewer?

An ARC reviewer is anyone who wants to read my book before it is released to the general public. You don’t have to be an official book reviewer, you can just be an average reader. The only stipulation is that you have to post a review to Amazon, Goodreads, a bathroom stall at a gas station—wherever!

You don’t even have to like the book. I mean, I would prefer if you did, but I’m not in the business of censoring readers or reviewers, and your opinion—whether good or bad—is valid. I’m just happy that people want to read my work!

Let's Celebrate Zombuary!

Horroaddicts.net has declared January Zombie Month, and I'm all for it!  I love any time of the year that's dedicated to zombies.  For some of us, the entire year is dedicated to zombies, but any excuse to celebrate works for me.

So let's celebrate!  How about some giveaways?  To begin, I'm going to giveaway a set of my Undead books.  To be entered for a chance to win, leave a comment and tell me whether you would want to be a zombie or a survivor after the apocalypse and why.  Please make sure to leave a way for me to contact you.  Shipping in the U.S. only.  The drawing will be held on Monday the 11th.

Personally, I would want to be a survivor.  I know the going would be tough and it would suck not to have running water to take a shower, but I'm interested to see how I would deal with the situation.  Would I be able to handle the stress?  Would I make it past the first day?  Would I completely lose my mind and spiral into insanity?  There's only one way to find out!

Zombie Games

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about zombies.  Usually it's in the context of how would I get out of here if zombies attacked?  I find it fun and enjoyable to think up various survival situations.  I often think about what types of supplies I would need.

My obsession can become your gain.  On Sundays, on my author blog, I am playing zombie games.  I give you a list of four supplies and ask you to put them in order of importance.  On Mondays, I reveal the correct order.  Everyone who plays has a chance to win any of my zombie books (Life After the Undead, Death to the Undead, Finding Eden) and the grand prize is a Zombie Survival Kit.

A to Z Blog Challenge - Q is for Quinn from Zombie Books Life after the Undead and Death to the Undead

Quinn is my male hero from my zombie books,  Life After the Undead and Death to the Undead, and the love interest of my female character Krista.  He's an 18-year-old boy who is trying to help Krista understand the world of the undead and help her survive.

Like so many other teens in the zombie apocalypse, Quinn doesn't have any parents, but that doesn't hold him back.  Born and raised on a ranch in Wyoming, he knows what it takes to survive.  Not only does he have deadly aim and a charming smile, but he can drive a semi and ride a horse.  His no-nonsense attitude keeps Krista out of danger, but his sympathy and patience teaches her the skills needed to survive.  It's not hard to see why Krista falls head over heels for him.

Zombie Guns

It looks cool.  It's got everything you need: large clip to hold lots of ammunition and a chainsaw when you run out of bullets.  Sadly, though, this gun wouldn't be that practical in the zombie apocalypse.  Can you imagine how heavy it would be?  Not only do you have to carry that, along with ammunition, food, and water, but you'll need fuel to run the chainsaw.  Otherwise, it's worthless.

Everyone has jumped on the zombie bandwagon.  It's a great place to be.  There is ammunition tailored specifically for zombies.  There are a slew of guns out there that claim to be the best weapon when it comes to killing undead.  In truth, any gun is going to work just fine.  As long as you have ammunition for it and know how to use it, you're golden. 

One of the things I like to do when writing my books is research guns.  While any gun will work just fine, it's nice to showcase a new one or find something that hasn't been seen very often.  Plus, I like guns so I like to be informed.  All of the details might not make it into the novel (most readers really don't care about the specs of a gun.  Plus, it makes the book read like a manual when you put those in), but I have them in the back of my mind.

For example, Krista in Life After the Undead and Death to the Undead is quite partial to a Zigana T.  It's a great gun and looks cool.  By the way, that site is a great place to get gun information.  I've used it often.

I have to be careful while researching guns and not show them to my husband.  I'm pretty good about finding nice, reliable, expensive guns, and he thinks he needs them.  It's tough because I want them around when the zombies rise up, but guns are useless without ammunition.  I'd rather have a few good guns and spend the rest of my money on bullets.

While it's not going to make or break your story if you have the latest or newest guns, it's still worth doing a little research to see what's out there.  Like I said, there are a lot of "zombie" weapons, but not all of them are practical.  If you want your story to be "real," I suggest having weapons that are real.  Take the time to see what's out there.  If you get the chance, go shoot the gun to see what the recoil is like, how it feels in your hand.  If "real" doesn't figure into your story or what type of weapons your characters carry, then the sky is the limit, and guns like the one pictured above will work just fine!
