Surviving Zombies in Thermopolis, Wyoming

Last Wednesday, I had the privilege of visiting the library in Thermopolis, Wyoming, to give my workshop on Surviving Zombies.  It was a blast!

I was excited to be at the Hot Springs County Library, and they were excited to have me. They decorated their room, and a few of the kids dressed up in costume. Eighteen kids total showed up to talk about what it would take to survive in the zombie apocalypse. And they had some great ideas and suggestions. I think they'll have a fighting chance. Then, we all ate pizza and cupcakes.

Boarded up windows with zombies trying to get in.

A zombie menace.

Message left by a survivor?

Another menace.

Hoodied zombies.

Zombie slayers.  And they were tough!

A striped zombie.

It was an amazing and fun experience to go to Thermopolis.  We want to go again and stay for longer.  There's a lot of stuff to do, and I would happily visit the library again!

Zombie Obsessed

Zombies are a huge part of my life.  They became a major part of it while I was working on my nonfiction book, but I find even day to day they have an impact.  It's not a bad thing, just an observation I've made.

This weekend, my family and I went Jeepin'.  While we were enjoying the outdoors, I mentioned to my spouse that I'm was glad we lived so close to mountains where we could easily run to escape the undead.  His response was that the area would be a little hard to find food in.  Maybe, but it wouldn't be impossible.

While at the gym in the morning, I always notice these weird, random doors that are 2 feet off the ground.  One of them says "Roof Access," and the other leads to an office in the pool area.  Scenarios of zombies running after me come to mind when I see these, and I imagine that behind those doors is a safe haven.

Being aware of my surroundings is never a bad thing.  If an emergency arises, I want to know where I can go to be safe.  Even though the dead probably won't rise from the grave and attack, I feel it's better to be safe than sorry.

Zombie Preparations

Apparently, everyone is preparing for the rise of the undead, including the Pentagon.  No doubt, conspiracy theorists will have a field day with this information.  As someone who is zombie obsessed, I think it's an interesting bit of data to have.  I hope it actually helps us when the apocalypse occurs.

Being prepared is the most important part of any natural disaster--or unnatural one such as the dead rising from their graves.  It's important to have a plan and a backup plan should the first one fail.  While the chances of zombies actually occurring is slim to none, other things could occur, including earthquakes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, etc.  Zombies are a great way to think about these situations because they are a worst-case scenario.  If you can be prepared for the undead, you can be prepared for anything.

Do you have a plan in place?  Have you talked to your family and friends about what to do should the worst occur?  Do you have supplies on hand?  Today is a great day to start planning your zombie/natural disaster survival.  It may come in handy.

How Do Zombies "Survive"?

When I travel (which, remember, isn't often), not only do I look for ways to escape town, I also take in the climate.  We have such a varying climates in the U.S., from tornadoes to wild fires to blizzards to extreme heat, how do we survive?  Probably because we bend the environment to our will.  We create heaters and air conditioners and safe places to go.  But what about zombies?  They don't have the brain capacity to create new things.

On the plus side, zombies no longer have the ability to feel.  They don't notice the extreme heat and cold.  As the walking dead, they no longer worry about anything, except maybe finding and eating humans, but I doubt the thoughts consume their entire day.  It depends on what you're reading.  Anyway, the weather still has to affect them in some way.

In  Life After the Undead, I explore that same question and claim that the zombies can't live in the East because the humidity causes them to deteriorate faster than normal.  They move to the West where the dry air preserves them.

At the moment, I'm in the Southwest visiting family, and I'm wondering if zombies would be able to survive here.  It's dry, there's no denying that, but it's also incredibly hot.  The sun pounds the earth with harsh rays, and it makes me wonder what it would do to a corpse.  As humans, we can counteract the effects by drinking water and finding shade, but zombies don't have that capacity.  What would happen to them?  Would they turn into a walking piece of leather?  Would they become so brittle every step would cause them to fall apart?

I'm going to have to contemplate this a little more and do some research.  To me, this kind of stuff is fascinating and could mean the difference between life and death.

An Interview with a Zombie Exterminator

Good afternoon Neeta. It's so good to finally meet you.

It's a pleasure, Amanda.  I appreciate this chance to tell folks about zombie extermination.  It's a growing specialization--unfortunately, because the demand is still growing--but every one of us hopes to work ourselves out of a job eventually.

So, tell me, why did you choose your career path as a zombie exterminator?

It's a family business.  My mother, God rest her soul, was a single mom working as a general exterminator when she and her partner inadvertently stumbled upon a huge zombie infestation  while investigating what a cemetery thought were rats.  She and her partner discovered they had a talent for mowing down zombies.  (In this case, literally.  That riding lawn mower saved more than a few lives that night.)  Since there was obviously a need, they specialized.  Mom was a real activist for the cause of zombie extermination and prevention as well.  I hope she looks at my efforts with the reality TV show, Zombie Death Extreme as another way of building awareness.

What makes a good zombie exterminator?

Strength:  strong arms, strong will, strong nerves… and a strong stomach.  You also need to be able to think on your feet.  Zombies, as we've come to learn, are far more variable than we saw in the movies.  It's amazing what can be used against them.  That's why I urge everyone to remember that your best defense against a zombie is not that butcher knife on the counter, but the cleaning products under the counter, the hamburger in the fridge, and the television.  (Turn it on and run!)

What's the best way to kill a zombie?

You have to destroy the brain:  sever the spine at the neck.  Decapitation, smash their brains.  Setting them on fire works well if they're I an advanced state of decay, but sometimes, that only stalls them enough to give you a chance to go for the neck.

Do you have a favorite weapon?

Chainsaw and a supersoaker full of TidyToidy.  They're the most effective, IMHO, but the chainsaw does get heavy.  I train a lot.

How does one secure one's home against the undead?

First, attitude.  Often an ARM (Animated Rotting Meat) will return to a familiar place--a home, workplace, bar…  Some people still think it's a miracle that their loved one is returning from the dead.  It's not--it's a tragedy in the making.  These are not people anymore.  I can't state that enough.  A moment's hesitation at seeing Uncle Joe can cost you your life--and maybe bring you back to hurt those you love.

Second, cell phone and car keys.  Most major cities have a skilled Z-Mat team and exterminators on call.  Get in your car and dial 9-1-1 as you speed away.  Some zombies are fast, but none can outrun a speeding car.

Third, cleaning products.  We don't know why, but with few exceptions, cleaning products will repel zombies.  Not the enviro-friendly stuff, however.  Bleach. Amonia.  You know those scrubbing bubbles?  Those are actually kind of funny to watch--but don't delay your escape to get some video on your cell phone!  Trust me, YouTube is not worth your life!

After that, imagination is your best defense.  Some zombies can be deflected by cigarettes; others by a beer.  Some will stop dead (pardon the pun) to watch Days of Our Lives.  In the Middle East, many devout families nonetheless keep a package of bacon in their refrigerators just for zombie defense.  Whatever you do, however, try it and run.

Is it true that if you blend in with a horde of zombies and pretend to be one, they will leave you alone?

No.  Oh, please, please, Amanda!  If any of your readers believes that tell them no!  They may get distracted by a pound of raw hamburger, but they can definitely tell the difference between a fresh brain and an undead one!

Thank you so much for your time.

No problem.  I hope folks will take a look at the book Karina Fabian wrote about some of my adventures on the Zombie Death Extreme Set.  It's called Neeta Lyffe, Zombie Exterminator.  It's a fun way to learn more about zombies and zombie defense.

Sabrina's Word Wednesday: Zombie Apocalypse

Sabrina's Word Wednesday: Zombie Apocalypse

So it pretty much speaks for itself. Zombie apocalypse. Also known as zompocalypse or necropocalypse, the zombie apocalypse is essentially the end of the world as we know it due to an outbreak of zombies.

We've seen it many times, in games, movies, books, and even TV shows. (Including my favorite, The Loki Variation) The general premise is that a zombie-causing virus or other means of transmission is released into the general public, creating a situation in which more people are infected than not, and exponentially the rate of transmission gets higher and higher. In a short time, there are few survivors, fighting or hiding to protect themselves from the zombies, and their world as they knew it is gone.

One of the most anticipated movies of 2013, World War Z, is a zombie apocalypse movie (very, very) loosely based on the book of the same name by Maxwell Brooks.

Brad Pitt and the zombie apocalypse? I'll be seeing that one the day it comes out...

Anyway, that just goes to show you how obsessed we are with the zombie apocalypse.

Of course, we all know, that every zombie apocalypse story is complete fiction. Because the zombie apocalypse hasn't happened. Yet. But some people have begun preparing for the zombie apocalypse, you know, just in case. They're called zombie preppers, and I am dedicating a whole other blog post just to those fine people.

What is your favorite zombie apocalypse scenario? It can be from a book, movie, game, whatever. Leave it in the comments!
